The derivation of an Arctic sea ice normal through temporal mixture analysis of satellite imagery

چکیده

The use of temporal mixture analysis (TMA) for creating a long-term baseline, or environmental ‘‘normal’’ is described. TMA is a promising analysis method derived from the hyperspectral image processing technique of spectral mixture analysis (SMA). TMA is algebraically identical to SMA, except that it is applied to temporal spectra rather than to electromagnetic spectra. TMA has particular potential to extract climate signals from long image sequences. To demonstrate the utility of TMA, this paper documents its use to isolate nine fundamental temporal signals (‘‘endmembers’’) from a 20-year Northern Hemisphere sea ice concentration image time series. The temporal endmembers establish a baseline of temporal variability that can be treated as an environmental normal. The ‘‘fraction images’’ produced by the analysis highlight the regions where the temporal signals are strongest and provide new insights into the dynamics of the Arctic sea ice cover. # 2007 Elsevier B.V. Arctic Sea Ice Imagery: a New Approach for Monitoring Environmental Change

In this paper we introduce the idea of Temporal Mixture Analysis (TMA) for analyzing long sequences of hypertemporal remote sensing imagery. The basis of this approach is spectral mixture analysis, which we adapt from the spectral domain to the time domain. The TMA procedure is demonstrated by applying it to a nine year record of sea ice concentrations in the Northern Hemisphere. We find that e...

Scaling Properties of Arctic Sea Ice Deformation in a High‐Resolution Viscous‐Plastic Sea Ice Model and in Satellite Observations

Sea ice models with the traditional viscous-plastic (VP) rheology and very small horizontal grid spacing can resolve leads and deformation rates localized along Linear Kinematic Features (LKF). In a 1 km pan-Arctic sea ice-ocean simulation, the small-scale sea ice deformations are evaluated with a scaling analysis in relation to satellite observations of the Envisat Geophysical Processor System...

Integrated SAR and lidar observations of the sea ice cover: Resolving the contributions of thermodynamics and dynamics to the ice thickness distribution

The response of the ice cover to large-scale gradients in atmospheric and oceanic forcing is concentrated along narrow zones of failure (up to tens of kilometers in width) resulting in openings, closings, and shearing (see Fig. 1). In winter, openings dominate the local brine production and heat exchange between the atmosphere and the underlying ocean. Convergence or closing of the pack ice for...

Statistical Modeling of Sea Ice Concentration Using Satellite Imagery and Climate Reanalysis Data in the Barents and Kara Seas, 1979-2012

Extensive sea ice over Arctic regions is largely involved in heat, moisture, and momentum exchanges between the atmosphere and ocean. Some previous studies have been conducted to develop statistical models for the status of Arctic sea ice and showed considerable possibilities to explain the impacts of climate changes on the sea ice extent. However, the statistical models require improvements to...

Navigation Assistance for Ice-infested Waters through Automatic Iceberg Detection and Ice Classification Based on Terrasar-x Imagery

Most icebergs present in northern latitudes originate from western Greenland glaciers, from where they drift into Baffin Bay, circulating north along Greenland coast and south along Canadian coast. Some of them drift more southwards up to Newfoundland, where they frequently cross shipping routes. Furthermore, the Arctic summer sea ice coverage significantly decreased over the last three decades...
